Anne Hathaway to Produce and Star in ‘The Lifeboat’ Adaptation
Post Categories: Films

Working Title and Focus Features have picked up the rights to Charlotte Rogan’s debut historical novel.

Anne Hathaway is attached to star in and produce The Lifeboat, an adaptation of a book by Charlotte Rogan, whose rights have just been jointly acquired by Working Title and Focus Features.

The story centers on Grace Winter, who is standing trial for murder in 1914. The young woman is both a newlywed and a widow, and she recounts how she survived the sinking of the transatlantic ship Empress with the help of her new husband only to end up in a lifeboat. The quandary, however, is that there are too many people in the boat and the survivors soon start talking about getting rid of certain people.

William Broyles Jr., whose credits range from Apollo 13 to Castaway to Flags of Our Fathers, is writing the script.

Hathaway will produce with Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Liza Chasin of Working Title, along with Film 360’s Suzan Bymel and Ben Forkner. Broyles will exec produce. Final producing credits are stlll being determined.

Jeb Brody, Focus’ president of production, spearheaded the acquisition on the studio’s side.

No director is currently attached.

Hathaway won an Oscar for best supporting actress for her work in Les Miserables, which Working Title produced, and is reuniting with Christopher Nolan, her Dark Knight Rises director, for his sci-fi adventure movie Interstellar. Other credits include an Oscar-nominated turn in Rachel Getting Married, Brokeback Mountain and The Devil Wears Prada.

She is repped by CAA, Management 360 and Sloane Offer.

CAA brokered the deal on behalf of the author in conjunction with David McCormick of McCormick & Williams Literary.

Anne Hathaway To Star With Matthew McConaughey in Christopher Nolan’s ‘Interstellar’
Post Categories: Films

EXCLUSIVE: I’m told that Anne Hathaway is near a deal to star with Matthew McConaughey in Interstellar, the next film that Christopher Nolan will direct. This is a heckuva follow up to Les Miserables, for which Hathaway won the Academy Award. It also reunites her with Nolan, after she last year played the Selina/Catwoman role in Nolan’s Batfinale The Dark Knight Rises. McConaughey is also enjoying a resurgence fueled by his Independent Spirit Award-winning turn in Magic Mike, and several other pics.

Not much is known about the specific log line (Nolan and cohorts work under the cone of silence) and that includes casting. I was able to break the news about McConaughey (he confirmed it a week later), and I am sure Hathaway’s deal will make. The film is a co-production between Paramount and Warner Bros and was originally set up in 2006 by Steven Spielberg, when Paramount owned DreamWorks, and after Spielberg became intrigued by Caltech physicist and relativity expert Kip S. Thorne and his scientific theory that wormholes exist and can be used for time travel. Spielberg set Jonah Nolan to write the script, which made it easy for Christopher Nolan to come aboard after Spielberg left the project. After all, the Nolan siblings have a collaborative track record, with Jonah hatching the short story that became Christopher’s first hit Memento, and following that with two Batfilms and The Prestige. Christopher Nolan signed on in January to write a script that merged an original idea of his with the script that Jonah wrote. The ambition is a film that will depict a heroic interstellar voyage to the farthest borders of our scientific understanding. Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas are producing with Lynda Obst. Jordan Goldberg is joining as exec producer alongside Thorne, who’ll remain on as technical consultant.

Hathaway is repped by CAA and Management 360?s Suzan Bymel.

Anne Hathaway to Star in Film Adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘Taming of the Shrew’
Post Categories: Films, News & Announcements

Anne Hathaway will star in an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew”, an individual with knowledge of the deal told TheWrap.

Abi Morgan, who scripted “The Iron Lady” and “Shame,” will handle the adaptation, a modern-day retelling of the iconic play set in mid-20th century Italy.

The project will be produced by Debra Hayward and Working Title, another individual with knowledge of the film told TheWrap.

Hayward, a former Working Title executive, left the company in June of 2011 to start her own production company, Monumental Pictures. She promptly signed a first-look deal with Working TItle, and “Shrew” will be the first film made under that agreement.

Universal and Working Title, Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner’s British production outfit responsible for “Fargo” and “Billy Elliot,” have a longstanding production relationship dating to 1999. Their current first-look deal runs through 2015, meaning Universal would get first crack at distributing the film. (more…)
