Ever been to one of those weddings that just will not end? “Rachel Getting Married” is the cinematic equivalent, a movie with a powerful performance from Anne Hathaway but a story undone by the self-indulgence of director Jonathan Demme, who loiters interminably on some scenes. Anne Hathaway, left, is Kym and Rosemarie DeWitt as Rachel in “Rachel Getting Married.” Demme’s detours into documentaries (“Neil Young: Heart of Gold,” “Jimmy Carter: Man from Plains”) actually serve him well as he crafts a loose, docudrama style that infuses great authenticity into this anguished reunion tale of family and friends. In fact, it was her own mother, Goldie Hawn, who first taught her about female solidarity. “A few years ago my brother was getting married and we had a bridal shower for my sister-in-law,” Hudson says. “My mom made a speech that I’ll never forget. She said, ‘I want all of you girls to look around the room. Even if you don’t know the woman next to you or if it’s your sister, I want you to remember one thing: Men, they come and go. They will hopefully stay, but you never know. But that girl sitting next to you will get you through everything.’ (more…) |

Anne Hathaway swears she she’s not one of those gals who obsesses about her dream wedding. But she does admit to thinking about at least one detail of the big day. “I haven’t thought about the food; I haven’t thought about the look; I haven’t thought about my dress. I haven’t really thought about the guy,” Hathaway says in the new issue of Modern Bride magazine. “But every once in a while, I’ll listen to a song, and I’m like, ‘I want that at my wedding.’ ” What’s on her playlist? “Maps” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs and “Walken” by Wilco are a couple of her faves. And she has high hopes for “You Are the Best Thing” by Ray LaMontagne. “That’s going to be, like the number one wedding song for the next 25 years,” predicts Hathaway, who stars in next month’s Bride Wars opposite Kate Hudson. “Trust me.” (more…) |
